| Water Sanitizers
Sanitizing the water in your hot tub is the most important thing to do to keep it hygienic. Sanitizers kill the bacteria that can grow in warm water.
There are various types of sanitizers;
- Chlorine: Chlorine is most well known sanitizer, because it the primary sanitizer used in swimming pools. Chlorine is also used in hot tubs,
available in form of either tablet or granules.
- Bromine : Most hot tub users prefer bromine as it doesn't have the smell of chlorine, typical of swimming pools.
Bromine specifically designed for hot tubs is produced in the form of tablets or granules.
A floating dispenser is typically used to allow the slow release of bromine into the water.
An advantage of Bromine is that it also works in a wide range of pH levels and doesn't need to be added as often as chlorine.
- Non Chemical Sanitizers : Many hot tub owners prefer a more natural approach, using none no chemical, mineral enzyme formulations,
these products don't entirely replace the use of chemicals but they do reduce the amounts required. These products are very effective in maintaining clean hygienic water
in your hot tub, however they are more expensive compared to chemicals such as chlorine or bromine.
Before adding any sanitizing product to your hot tub, you should check the current levels using a test strip, which are very easy to use. |
Water Balance
- PH Balance: The pH balance of the water in a hot tub is an important part of water keeping the water clear and hygienic as
if the level is too high or too low the sanitizers would not work as effectively. To prevent the water from becoming too alkaline (above 7.8) or too acidic (less than 7.2)
you simply test the water using a test strip, then use pH additive to achieve the right pH balance. If the water does become too acidic then it may irritate your skin, if it
becomes too alkaline then it will cause scaling of minerals around the tub.
- Alkalinity control : Total alkalinity refers to the ability of the water to resist changes in pH levels acting like a buffer. By controlling
the alkalinity in your hot tub can help maintain the pH balance for longer periods thereby reducing how often you need balance the pH.
- Calcium Hardness : Depending on where you live, the level of minerals in the water supply in your area maybe particularly hard or soft
water, so it's worthwhile checking your water calcium levels with a test strip and adjusting them if necessary you can adjust your calcium levels. The use of a water hardener
additive is more common.

Water Testing
- Testing Strips : The water in a hot tub should be regularly checked to ensure its safe and clean, this is a simple process
using test strips. These small sticks are dipped into the water then compared with a colour chart to produce the test results, very easy to use.

Water Clarifiers
Water claifiers are used to remove dissolved organic matter, commonly known as shock treatments they oxidize and destroy non-filterable waste compounds
like dead skin and cosmetics. There are two types of shock treatments; chlorine and non-chlorine, both are as good as each other to oxidize the water in your hot tub. However
if filling with fresh water then chlorine shocks should be used first, thereafter a non-chlorine shock can be used.

Hot Tub Cleaning
When cleaning your hot tub its very important to use a non-abrasive cleaning pad to avoid any harm to the finish, the surface cleaner should be low foaming type,
and is mostly used to remove tide marks found above the waterline.
The water treatment chemicals that you use in your hot tub or spa need to be of a higher quality compared to products designed for swimming pools, the reason
for this is that hot tub chemicals are operating at much higher temperatures compared to swimming pools.
40 Degree Leisure provide hot tub chemical products at the lowest possible prices for cheap and efficient water maintenance. With a huge selection of quality branded
